Ecutek EVO X competing in Silverstone 24 hour race PDF Print E-mail

Ecutek are pleased to be able to announce it's involvement in the Official Mitsubishi UK race programme.

Mitsubishi UK decided that the best place to publicise the strength and power of the EVO X is in endurance racing, and as such they have commissioned a car built by ADR Motorsport and Ecutek.

EcuTeK's brief was to produce a 400bhp package for the engine capable of running for 24 hours, and that the engine remain completely standard apart from external modifications.

EcuTeK took the brief so seriously that they did not change the spark plugs, nor did they lift the cam cover or remove the sump. The oil was changed, a new turbo was fitted as well as higher flow injectors. The engine was totally stock, still using the stock air filter and airbox and a high flow exhaust with catalyst.

The car competed in it's first event on the 20th-21st of September at the Britcar 24 Hour race at Silverstone, and like all new car builds everything was last minute.

The car missed qualifying and as it crossed the line for the start of the race it had completed a grand total of 5 laps and for one of those it was on fire!! {turbo oil feed pipe union failed}. The single aim of entering this race was to prove the endurance of the car and not to worry about position.

The bare fact that the car finished in 25th place does not do justice to it's performance. The final position was due to a fuel tank problem which meant the tank could not netiher be completely filled up or run to empty, meaning the car had to pit 45 times compared to others who pitted as little as 9 times.

The Evo X produced a fastest lap 30 minutes from the start and again 30 minutes from the end showing its class, and completed 1651 miles (2657kms) without an engine hitch.

EcuTeK ran a PC in the car and using FlashCAN datalogged the whole race. EcuTeK were able to use remote desktop via GPRS to access this PC and analyse the log files. This allowed them to make changes to the ROM file during the race and then program a spare ECU in the garage and when the car came in for a pit stop so the ECU could be changed. This was done three times during the race to allow for some fuel and boost trims changes.

This is a major achievement for the car and for Ecutek and of course benefits all of EcuTeKs clients due tothe further development and experiences gained.

James Stewart
About the author:

James is a mad Subaru fan. His family have also been bitten by the Subaru bug, with his wife, brother, parents and parents-in-law all owning Subaru's.

Previously he owned a fearsome green MY01 WRX wagon that has been heavily modified by MRT, but family responsibiities meant swapping it for a silver MY06 Forester XT.  The challenge now is to keep the Forester as a suitable family daily driven car whilst enhancing its already impressive abilities with suitable modifications!

In addition to keeping the MRT staff busy with his latest ideas on how to extract more power from his car, James works full-time as the Sys Admin for one of Sydney's leading private girl's school. He also finds time to write the MRT monthly magazine and assist with web development.

James is married with three kids and enjoys taking them for drives, as well as getting out to the family property west of Bathurst with friends and family whenever possible. He also enjoys taking time to see good movies, reading and photography.
