Subaru 2009 MY09 WRX gets a thumping 195kw! PDF Print E-mail

Subaru MY09 WRX with 195kw

When the bug-eye WRX was launched by Subaru in 2000, there was a hushed silence and it was widely decreed by the press after a few test drives that whilst the new model was a nicer drive, more refined and had much improved handling, it had lost the spark and thrill of the outgoing MY00 "classic" model. In short, some thought that Subaru was losing the plot somewhat. The facelifted MY03 and new 2.5L MY06 showed that Subaru was listening.

Then came the MY08 WRX and the press reviews were even less inspiring that those about 'ole bug-eye. Recently coming last in its category in the 2008 Motor BFYB competition, the MY08 WRX was even declared by some to be unworthy of the WRX name. Subaru wasn't losing the plot, it had lost the plot.

Today, at Sydney's Motor Show, Subaru have once again shown they were listening with the announcement of the revamped 2009 MY09 WRX. There have been rumours for a few weeks, and last week we got inside knowledge that the MY09 was going to get a serious dose of steroids, and now here it is. Get this - 195kw (up 26kw), 343Nm of torque (up 23Nm), upgraded suspension, and wider tyres (225/45x17, versus 205/50) all point to a much more serious WRX. Indeed, the MY09 WRX has as much power as the MY02-05 STi, and is lighter too! We can't wait to get our hands on it.

A larger turbocharger from the STi and increased boost from 11psi to 15psi, allows figures of 195kW @ 6000rpm, and 343Nm @ 4000rpm from the 2.5-litre flat-four engine. Fuel consumption is improved over the previous WRX model around three percent, from 10.7 l/100km to 10.4 l/100km in the combined cycle and a resulting reduction in CO2 emissions from 252g/km to 247g/km.

The wider tyres and upgrade suspension should answer the criticisms of the MY08's WRX lack of grip due to skinny tyres, and excessive body roll in cornering.  “We’ve spent a lot of time with the engineers on Australian roads and in local conditions, developing a suspension package that appeals to the driving enthusiast,” says Nick Senior., Subaru's Manging Director

“The result is an Impreza WRX that is true to our core Subaru DNA, of delivering pure driving confidence. Drivability of Impreza WRX is sharper and, combined with the power and torque benefits, this is a compelling, aggressive package.

Impreza WRX 2009 MY09 highlights:

  • 15.4 per cent more power
  • 7.2 per cent more torque
  • Better fuel efficiency (combined cycle)
  • Carbon dioxide emissions reduced
  • Upgraded suspension
  • Larger turbocharger and increased boost
  • Leather trim with sunroof, and satellite navigation options
  • Enhanced suspension package - sharper, aggressive handling
  • New mesh grille with WRX badge
  • Distinctive red brake calipers
  • Wider tyres
  • Red stitch seating adds to sporty appearance
  • Pricing maintained at MY08 levels – simple choice between hatch or sedan, as prices identical

Subaru MY09 WRX with 195kwThe new WRX is released in early December, and we reckon that there will be quite some demand for it. MRT will be starting development on it as soon as we can, as we are convinced that whilst the MY09 is a significant improvement, we can still enhance this car much further.

Do you plan to purchase the MY09 WRXl?  Then review our MVD partnership here where you can benefit!

It will also interesting to see what Subaru do with the MY09 STi. We've predicted and continue to believe that power in the STi will jump to around 243kw, and we can't wait for that either . . .

About the author:

James is a mad Subaru fan. His family have also been bitten by the Subaru bug, with his wife, brother, parents and parents-in-law all owning Subaru's.

Previously he owned a fearsome green MY01 WRX wagon that has been heavily modified by MRT, but family responsibiities meant swapping it for a silver MY06 Forester XT.  The challenge now is to keep the Forester as a suitable family daily driven car whilst enhancing its already impressive abilities with suitable modifications!

In addition to keeping the MRT staff busy with his latest ideas on how to extract more power from his car, James works full-time as the Sys Admin for one of Sydney's leading private girl's school. He also finds time to write the MRT monthly magazine and assist with web development.

James is married with three kids and enjoys taking them for drives, as well as getting out to the family property west of Bathurst with friends and family whenever possible. He also enjoys taking time to see good movies, reading and photography.
