I had a '94 TS Charade a while back. I spun a bearing returning home from work doing about 130kph on the highway in SA. After heaps of searching around and price finding I decided to drop in the De-Tomaso 1.6Lt with the c/r gearbox.
GEE-ZUZ. My mate in a VS 5.0Lt Maloo ute got the shock of his life when he spotted me doing a u-turn behind him and tried to speed off. He had no chance. He was doing 60Kph when I turned around at about 25-30Kph and passed him in no time.
This conversion cost me around $3500 but that was back in 1999 or 2000.
It's a simple bolt-in/wire-up swap and motor/gearbox can be bought for around $2500 now.
(+ $650 for exhaust setup)
I also got lowered Pedders suspension and adjustable camber pins for the rear.
Just one word of warning.....
Don't use the standard 5 speed for the cheaper option. The extra 50% in hp will smash them like an egg. (I have 2 still sitting in the shed with no 2nd gear.)

the toyota starlet engine with a manual gearbox is the best option
1998 era
or a gti turbo charade engine with matching gearbox

I have the 1.3 4 cyl efi and its gutless 4 valves per cylinder

the computers unless you hot chip it wont do much
the timing belt would probably break the engine is too weak and a shocking gear ratio
